Not saying this is true in Texas but, where I'm from you are putting what is best for the fraternity in the hands of 3 on the investigating committee, which I know from observation is very haphazard at best. One way or the other it is putting trust in someone.
Don't let the fear of memorization deter you from joining.

In my jurisdiction, proficiencies are only heard at stated mtgs. I'm sure this is not followed 100% as are a number of other things.
With multiple candidates there are a variety of ways it is conducted.
I know where you're coming from but having been on finance committees off and on for years it is a necessary evil.

I also think it was fantastic. I especially liked the presentation. Without the "talking head" reading to me. The graphics were an important part of the spoken words to me.

This thread started with the subject of "attending church" and has wandered afield.
I still maintain that whether or not I attend church or how often I attend is none of Freemasonry's business.
For me, a "church" is not necessary for my time spent in devotion to my Deity.
Had I been asked about church attendance I would have told them to MYOB and given back the petition.
