Great advice brother! :p
On a more serious note, I personally subscribe to the same mentality, more or less...or at least I try to. Everyone is always sitting around waiting for someone else to take action, might as well be that person.
I can understand why my lodge didn't want to merge at the time, it was a few years away from it's 150 year anniversary and is the oldest lodge in the county. Is this enough reason to keep a lodge on it's last legs standing? Maybe, maybe not...still, perseverance was to the lodge's advantage in...
This is very true, my lodge is an example of this as well as there was a time that I'm told the brethren rarely had enough members present to open and bills were often paid out of pocket by the few active members that showed up.
Today we are pretty healthy, not all the chairs are filled but...
I posted a link to this brother's blog about a week ago. I've been pretty impressed with what I've read so far and thought you guys might enjoy this as well.

Sorry if this has been...
Some realtors have a real gift for finding the right camera angles that make that shack look like a nice place...or keep the neighbors houses out of the picture.
We've been looking for a while and I'm in agreement though: the less pics the worse the property...and if there's no interior pics...
Ya, this article was definitely titled to be an attention-getter but I think the author makes some very good points. Here's think link:

I'm looking forward to some enlightening debate on this. At least I hope. :)
This is one of those books that really needs to be read more than once to fully appreciate. With hard texts like this I find it's best for me to read it once to learn about the ideas and then once or twice more to fully understand. Plato's Republic is the same for me also.
Personally, I think...
The title of this thread is probably misleading. I saw something today that rubbed me the wrong way and I'd like to vent a little bit...once I get it off my chest I'd really appreciate the guidance though.
I'm on the internet committee for my lodge, which means I'm in charge of the website...
I don't know how it may work in your jurisdiction but, since your lodges share a building, the only real issue would be that his dues are going to another lodge, correct? As you mentioned, your lodge could still help with the degrees and, I assume, he could visit your lodge and vice-versa...
Re: For those who have sat in the East for a degre
I've only conferred a FC myself but it definitely seems to be easiest from all I've observed and taken part in. Not only that but I personally believe its the best degree to start learning and conferring with because, once learned, you can...
What part of Oregon are you moving to? That's a very beautiful part of the country but I hear it can get a good bit colder than we're used to here in Texas.
I hope you have a smooth transition there and wish you the best of luck. :)
It sounds more like a state law than a GL law you are referring to...however:

The only item I see really restricted from being raffled is money. IMO...
I think Pike was a very smart man who was very knowledgeable about Freemasonry. That being said, a lot of his ideas and quotes have been misunderstood and taken out of context in a way that does more harm than good for the fraternity...then again he might not have intended for outsiders to read...
I think being a Past Master is the only way you get a vote at Grand Lodge unless you're a sitting WM or warden here in Texas. I understand the logic but I think it also inadvertently puts the PM title on a pedestal for the wrong reasons.
Other than that, PMs don't really get treated much...
Background checks are really just a smart practice, especially if you want to insure the men joining your lodge are quality people. We charge a fee at our lodge whenever someone turns in a petition. It's non-refundable and goes towards a background check, regardless of who the person is. It's...
Those who desire power are rarely those fitting to receive it. The best WMs are those that lead by serving others, not through authority alone. Just my opinion.
SMIB my brother, elections are always a stressful time for me.
I can see where you're coming from brother...and it doesn't get any less frustrating over the years to see a few men doing all the work for the lodge.
However I'm also of the belief that people vote with their feet and they will be present at whatever events they care enough to support. If an...
You can hold fundraisers to offset the cost of not charging enough to run your lodge in the first place. That can have the unfortunate affect it sidetracking the lodge from it's mission if the fundraiser takes a lot of time and effort to plan.
I'm sorry to hear this brother...I've found that one bad year can easily undo the hard work of ten good years. People vote with their feet and if they don't like the direction the lodge is going the attendance will reflect that.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem that there is much you can do for...
Dotage - A period of life where one is old and weak
Dotard - An old person that is weak or senile
I interpret it like this: If the potential member might be a burden on the lodge, or has some pre-existing condition that would make it near impossible to learn the work and attend lodge regularly...
