Religions views of Masonry

Reading the thread on the Roman Catholic church and it's (conflicting/confusing) views on Masonry reminded me that other religions and churchs have some strange practices regardings Masonry also.
I once interviewed a Pastor with a church that belongs to the Missouri Synod of Lutheran Churches. He was adamantly opposed to Masonry. His 'reasoning' was that since we met in secret we had to be satanic. As the interviewed went on I let that comment go without responding. I later told him I might be interested in his church but would first like to visit a couple meetings of the church council. He became quite indignant and refused saying those were private and secret. So much for his church. Many years later, with a different pastor I did join that church. But, I was told that I could not become a member of the Council unless I renounced Masonry. Again, as years passed that requirement was dropped but some members still had the belief that Masonry and Shrine were satanic. I have found many pastors who claim opposition to Masonry. In every case their knowledge of Masonry is zero, complete ignorance. But, they claim to "know" certain things, all of which a patently false. It is my opinion that many pastors like to have control over their members and oppose anything that might take their focus (and money) away from the church. For the record, I am still a practicing Lutheran in another synod. When/if the subject comes in a conversation tied to religion I just stay silent and do not argue, as we are taught. Besides, it is pointless to debate with ignorance.

I tend to be believe most opposition to Freemasonry - be it church or just the general person on the street - comes from ignorance more than anything. These are people either unwilling or incapable of making an informed, educated conclusion of their own. Someone TOLD them such and such, and the HEARD this and that, so it has to be true. When your "news" comes from the grocery store checkout line and the Jerry Springer Show, well, that tells me a lot.

It has been my experience that most people have NO IDEA why they believe the things that they believe. By studying the science of Masonry one can learn why this is true. This also explains why arguing with them is pointless: because the reasons they give are not the real reasons.

About a year after i was raised i was visiting.my aunt and uncle who are both preachers. My Aunt pulled me aside and said she wanted to talk to me about this thing i was joining, she couldnt even remember what it was called. She told me it was sinful as we had to take an oath to something other then God country and family. I told her that the Obligation specifically mentions that those three things take precedence over everything. She told me to pray on it before i went any further. I again told her that that is one of the very first things you do in lodge. She just kinda looked at me gave me a hug and told me to.be careful.......lol

So if someone meets in secret, something foul must be going on...yet their Council meetings were secret? :)
Yeah, I caught that too. By the pastor's reasoning the Council meetings must be satanic.
I am a member of a Free Methodist Church. They are not exactly enamored of Masonry but my pastor dosen't consider it a big deal.
