Question about transferring an EA

I did not want to hijack the "Blackballed" thread so I am starting my own here.
I had a man approach me that has been initiated well over a year ago at a lodge in South Texas. Shortly after he was initiated his job transferred him to the Dallas area. He is now wanting to complete his degrees and become a member of our lodge.
What steps does he or we as a lodge need to take to move his membership and have him finish the degrees?

Your Secretary would need to contact the Secretary of the Lodge that initiated him and ask for either a waiver of jurisdiction (preferred) or permission to teach him his work & confer his remaining degrees by courtesy.

What Bill said. It's usually not a big thing. It has to come to a vote in the lodge, but I've never seen a situation where it has been denied. Especially if it's because the brother has moved.

So far I have not yet seen a waiver of jurisdiction vote. I've read about it in the law book. Could you please explain why it's preferred?

I've seen on several occasions a Brother gets his MM and/or FC degree at another lodge by courtesy and then immediately affiliates with them. It looks like slightly less paperwork to me with little other effective difference.

The waiver is preferred in the instance of a PCS because the Brother then comes under the jurisdiction of the Lodge closest to him, as opposed to a Lodge far away, and the "back & forth" paperwork is thus eliminated. In addition, when degrees are conferred by courtesy, although the Lodge conferring them may incur some expense in so doing, the degree fees accrue to the Lodge holding jurisdiction over the candidate (Art. 480). That has always seemed unfair to me, especially in the instance of a MM degree, where aprons, Monitors, Bibles, etc. are commonly presented to the newly-raised Brother.

As members of military we are constantly moved from station to station and when we start something we sometimes get moved in the middle of it all. I was raised and then months later sent to school and PCS'd. Didn't get to do much with my lodge.

When we do courtesy degrees, we tell the sending lodge that they need to send that stuff along with the brother bringing the candidate, or give it to the candidate later. We don't provide it.

It was done the same with my Raising. I wasn't Raised in my home Lodge, it was a Lodge in the next district. I wasn't presented with my apron, bible, and study material until my Lodge's next meeting.

Check the local regs for how long they keep EA's on the books.

I *believe* our constitution states that any member of the fraternity that is not a MM can be dropped from the roles after a year. If TX has something similar, there may be an extra step to get him activated and going again before he can even be voted on to be released to another lodge.

Texas does not have that rule. Once a Brother has been initiated here, he remains a Mason until either he withdraws from the Fraternity, gets suspended or expelled for cause, or The Grand Architect calls him home.
