$500 initiation fees? Wow. Our SGIG just told us to cut ours back from $250 (which included Bridge to Light, Master Craftsman Program, cap, and an actual ring (not a fake one in a lucite pyramid) to $125 and make the cap and ring optional at extra cost.
And "mouth to ear" is always 100% accurate? You never have a couple of PM's debating about a word or a movement?
Our cipher doesn't have all the floor work, either.
Second and fourth Tuesdays, dark in July and August, only second Tuesday in December due to holidays. We do business and lodge education on second Tuesday, degree work on fourth Tuesday. We've been fortunate enough to always have candidates for the last five years or so.
I don't know about South Africa, but here you can get a decent tux cheaper than a lot of suits. One way is to buy a used one from a rental place. Another is online with a place like www.uniformalwearhouse.com.
Also look into the book Is it True What They Say about Freemasonry by Arturo DeHoyos and S. Brent Morris. It will clear up A LOT of the misconceptions you're bringing up.

Our current WM came via a one-day class, so they do work out. We've had very few do it that way.
As far as Scottish Rite "reunions," my Valley doesn't do reunions. We confer or communicate all 29 degrees over a ten month schedule, one night a month with a few months being twice a month.
The...
It is also argued that the term is misleading because it's not truly a unified "rite." Each of the bodies (Chapter, Council, and Commandery) have their own independent national bodies, with none having any authority over any of the others. In Scottish Rite the Lodge of Perfection, Chapter of...
This is also EXTREMELY untrue in Minnesota. Here it is considered unmasonic conduct to discuss your vote at all, including with the WM. The ballot is personal and private. The report of the investigating committee is advisory, not binding. If there's a black ball in the box, NO ONE may ask...
There are those who think the Scottish Rite is more popular because of the "ego" thing of getting the 32nd Degree, whereas the York Rite doesn't number their additional degrees and there aren't as many. I had other reasons for choosing the Scottish instead of the York.
Meh, I think that understanding what it was all about is more important than rote memory of a long question/answer catechism. How many brothers never crack another Masonic book or journal after they return their proficiencies?
