I think there can be a happy mix. I think better public awareness is a must. We have 100's of years of bad press and people making money off of soiling our reputation and/or misrepresenting us for their own gain. So I would say we have a reasonability to make sure the truth is out there. Now...
This has to be the most unique way of learning it I've heard. As I often tell people, different method work for different people. Figure out what works for you, and it sounds like you did.

Mark, you may try looking the lodges up in your area of Austin on the Grand Lodge of Texas website under the Lodge Locator. From there it should give you some contact info for the individual lodges. Give them a call or an email, and I am sure they will be happy to meet and talk with you.
I would like to think that part of the world is quickly losing patience with radical groups. I hope they start seeing Egypt as more of a roadmap. They didn't have to resort to suicide bombers or ambushing people. They protested, for the most part non-violently, and their fair and reasonable...
Probably the same place a group of gentleman did 235 years ago as they sat together as equals and discussed such subjects.
It often floors me how how we are written out of history, especially considering the huge impact we've had on it in the last 250 years.
