Are they really laws (in the sense that they truly govern what's happening), or are they really just accurate mathematical descriptions of what happens or will happen?
That's good, that is rare among philosophers in this age (most have jumped of the Kantian cliff...lol). I'll have to read Mayr...he sounds interesting. Harre is of the same mindset (philosophical realism). I also need to read The Modeling of Nature by the late Rev. William Wallace, OP. I heard...
I disagree to a point because the shared epistemology of Aquinas is grounded in sense knowledge that points to the existence of a physical universe (i.e. there is an extra-mental world that is knowable via our senses). I do not get that from every philosopher of science (especially...
" You cannot do physics or cosmology without an assumed philosophical basis. You can choose not to think about that basis: it will still be there as an unexamined foundation of what you do. The fact you are unwilling to examine the philosophical foundations of what you do does not mean those...
Brother Maloney, I don't always agree with you, but these last few posts have been spot on. I like the notion of Hiram Abiff as a prefiguration, or a type (for those into typology), for Christ. It makes that particular allegory in our ritual far more rich.
My understanding of the Texas certification system is that it's primary purpose is to certify instructors so that the work gets passed on as correctly as possible since Texas' work is passed on orally. I've known a few brothers who have A, B, and C Certificates who never work in the degrees, but...
I sure can (I'm working on my A certificate, which I lost years ago because I got too busy being a new dad---my cable tow got really short there for awhile).
"Truth DOES NOT MATTER to believers!" This is not logical at all! I'm offended by that statement to the very core of my being! I have a Master's degree in philosophy with specializations in the philosophy of science and Medieval philosophy. As a philosophical realist who recognizes the findings...
Oak Forest is my mother lodge, but not my home lodge now. My current lodge is much more relaxed than most and jeans with t-shirts and/or collared shirts are quite common...even on degree nights. When I was at Oak Forest, I was strongly encouraged to wear a shirt with tie, or even sports coat...
I wholly concur. If a man joins the Lodge to move onto another masonic body, he will still have to maintain his blue lodge membership. In every lodge I've been around, there are those brothers who are active in one ore more body than they are the blue lodge, some PMs even do this after they pass...
In the SR the 4th, 14th, 18th, 30th, and 32nd degrees are the mandatory degrees that one must witness to be considered a 32nd Degree SR Mason. Most SR Valley's do the mandatory degrees in one long day. It's only been recently that the Houston Valley has been spreading them out over several...
Congrats brothers! I don't know if I'll be able to make it (Oak Forest is my home lodge), but I'll be there in spirit and hope to make it over there sometime for a visit.
Yes, this...and there are several errors in the book that I've seen that you wouldn't know were errors if you didn't already know the work. I believe it's published as an "aid to the memory" and for that, it is good. I would not recommend it for learning something that you did not already know.
I do have a code book, however I did learn the work moth to ear when I first earned a certificate in 1998 (lapsed in 2000). Now, I'm using it as a refresher course so that I can re-earn a certificate. I will make sure I run through everything with one of our "A certificate" holders before I...
