Rapper 'Apathy' Is Indeed a Mason

Funny. Someone has sent me a vid of his asking the same question last year... I'd responded I was unsure, but there were clear masonic references in his music (and not just in titles) but that the profanity in the same was not something I associate with Freemasonry which makes me question if he is a member of a regular body.... but then again many people mistakenly think Freemasonry is a group of 80 year old powerful protestants or devil worshipers and there is no reason why a Bro could not be a rapper if he was not within the (also often false) stereotype of musical felon..

On one hand, i want to celebrate his showcasing of our Craft through music. But on the other hand, i'm dry heaving with stomach sickness.
It disturbs me that a trend is going on to make Masonry popular through various media.
I think for the most part our Craft has historically been low key for very practical reasons.

Although we do have already a fair share of cowans & eavesdroppers within our lodges, those numbers will only continue to grow bigger because of our tendency to want our Masonry to be popular.

Freemasonry for everybody! Freemasonry for all! Yeah right.

I think brother is connecting two things he enjoys. If using anything of Masonic design results in profit then the above links are also using Masonry for personal gain.

I don't see how having a music video filmed is worse than having a news crew inside a lodge room. What I don't care for is the wearing of items one might not have earned. But I don't know if he is a sitting master or a past master.

While I clearly disagree with other brothers here I in know way want to come across as disrespectful. I love that we as Masons can disagree and still be brothers. In the words of Cliff Porter "masonry isn't special because you can succeed. Masonry is special because you can fail".

Those listed websites are legit businesses to serve the Craft needs. Naturally they operate to provide Brothers with a product upon receipt of payment. Sorry but I can't see how they are 'using' the Craft in the sense of personal exploitation.

Cliff.... haven't heard that name for a while.

There was a woman wearing a KT hat in a video or promo image a few years ago. This prompted a long discussion in another group. Conclusion was in art such things become a prop... hence I would not worry about if a person was or was not entitled to wear it.

I think this bro is bound to be controversial. I find the swearing difficult to take but it also washes over me a bit.

I've made a few decisions about filming in our lodge room. The test is will this substantially bring the craft into disrepute? I've green lighted a national TV show where a Freemason was a murderer. The reality was a cold blooded murderer killing for personal gain is not fit to be a Freemason. It was "art" and respectfully done but not reality: even my girls were rightly saying it was not an accurate representation of Freemasonry. They knew art was not reality. I was happy because it put the Craft in a current national TV show while earning a significant revenue stream.... i think it did not damage the Craft so I was for it.

This guy , let's minus the profanity and listen to the words...

Some folk think making money in anyway in connection to Freemasonry is wrong. We don't think that way because we pay our Tylers and Organists. Once, Lodge secs were paid, and indeed often still have dues waived. I've been paid by GL and others for professional services. Rotary gives us a good model in the 4 way test, more succinct than our system;

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Not sure where Apathy sits in that..

I don't think they are using the craft. I'm saying they, the same as the rapper, are using Masonic items to make a personal living. The side effect of me benefiting from ones business does not negate the benefit they receive. If we are to stretch it to the extreme all Masons use the craft for personal benefit. Being a self help program (making good men better) is by definition selfish.

The questions I think we have are, "what level of selfishness are we comfortable with?" and "what is the persons intention?". Without answers to these questions it is difficult to make an informed statement on the situations without assuming. No assuming is not always a bad thing it's something we have to do in normal daily life.
