My boss puts my working tools to the test.

Even in the face of persecution and threatening adversity stay in honor...betray not yourself...speak not against your own convictions and above all do not become an "ass licker" ...it's better to lose your job completely and be a pauper than to sink to the level of the bullshitters.

Break, but never bend.

Super simple terms...

my boss thinks he can run a construction business because he knows how to swing a hammer.

He would be dead in the water without the people who work for him.

It is amazing how someone can own a business and not know how to apply the math or law required to perform the simplest tasks in Land Surveying.

Imagine having a Worshipful Master who looked at you funny when you handed him the working tools of our Craft ... as if he never saw them before in his life and you know you're screwed because he is the one you count on for the lodge to survive the year. (why do I think I'm going to hear horror stories concerning my analogy?)

The economy is tough. Otherwise I'd be gone long ago.

also, this is my 16th year here so it's not like I'm speaking from a short term commitment.

Though your case might be an extreme one, there is actually noone in the world that has all knowledge and ability to do anything. Cooperation is almost always needed. There is a article from an economist from the 1930s that might inspire you, its called 'i pencil'. Google it. It puts a lot if things in perspective.

While certain ppl lack even the most basic of skills for certain tasks, they still manage to succeed in other areas and are, however inadequately, able to keep a company afloat for a long time, with the inspired help of many. However awkward, it has been a long term provider of income for you apparently.

Of course, im looking at it in abstraction and from a distance, void of emotion. And there is every possibility i might be hopelessly wrong in every way.

In my line of work the person running the business is a Licensed Land Surveyor who has done 4 years in an ABET certified university and then sat as a Licensed Surveyor in Training for another two to four years before becoming fully licensed. High end math classes and law classes comparable to a student pursuing a specialized education in real estate law.

I myself have 20 years in the field. I have three years of college under my belt. Life happened and college took a back seat because I slacked off as a young kid (It took 10 years to get to be a Junior in college)

So now my boss has zero experience in land surveying. All he does is grease the clients for work and those who work for him get it done. My belief is that he puts on the tyrant act to distract from his lack of knowledge because "he is never wrong." If he worked for someone for a day he could be put in his place.

He abuses his secretaries verbally. He talks to me about everyone else so I know he talks about me when he talks to others. The only difference is that I'm not subject to the abuse at the first person level but I know he doesn't have **a tongue of good report. :thumbup1:

I could go on and on and on but I digress.

Edit: And the thing that gets my blood boiling is ... he talks to you in the third person.

It's not, "Did you get that job done? I need to get it to the bank for a closing by lunch."

It's "Did Steve get that job done?"

I turn around and look behind me as if there is another person in the room.

Its not nice indeed. I could suggest all sorts of things, but knowing how long youve been there, all have been tried already, which makes my giving advice disrespectful, so i will refrain from it. All i can do is wish you the strength to carry on for as long as you have to, the courage to take on opportunities when they arrive and the will to take those in a similar position with you if you can leave one day.
