Ashlars

There was a recent blog online from someone who had a tour of Freemason's Hall in London. One of the rooms described was the Grand Master's Lodge. In the description it was noted that the Ashlars were placed near the doors so that the Brethren could touch them as they entered or left the room; the Rough Ashlar on the way in, the Perfect Ashlar on the way out.

I shared this blog, and the story of the Ashlars, with the Lodge I'm visiting here, and was pleasantly surprised last week when I attended an EA Degree there and discovered they had incorporated this idea in their own Lodge.

Very neat! I like this idea very much, I feel the rough/smooth ashlars are symbols that get too little attention here in Texas.

We have a set of rough and smooth on the steps in the East. They are a bit heavy to give to the new EA's during the lecture though. :001_tt2:

My lodge didn't have a set of ashlars, which was odd since this area is famous for quarrying Kasota Stone, a particularly attractive type of limestone that gets shipped all over the world. So, I went to one of the local quarries and had them cut me a rough and perfect ashlar, and they are now on the steps in the east. I enjoy having the local connection to our ashlars.
