    When visiting a new lodge....

Over the past two-and-a-half years, my little blue journal says that I have traveled to 43 different lodges around the state for one reason or another, mostly for degrees, schools, or similar projects. Only once or twice have I had to be examined, everywhere else there was someone who knew me...

I am interested in the diffrences between prince hall and f&am

Arkansas currently does not have recognition between the Grand Lodge of AR and the PHA GL of Arkansas. There was an attempt to build some sort of bridge several years ago, but the PHA folks said they liked things the way they are. Individually, we all get along well, but there is no mutual...

    Membership numbers

Stated meetings, once monthly on the first Thursday. We also meet every Wednesday and Thursday evening for fellowship and (supposedly) ritual practice & instruction. Each Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. until around 9:30 or so for coffee and candidate instruction. Community breakfast at the...

How does your lodge handle & schedule conferring of degrees?

We confer the degrees individually as petitions are read and balloted on, and as candidates turn in their proficiency. We meet the first Thursday of each month, so if a degree is coming up, it will usually be scheduled on a subsequent Thursday evening, based on everyone's schedule. Setting the...

    Membership numbers

Southwestern Little Rock, AR: Membership has been hanging steady at around 130 for the past three years. Average stated meeting attendance is 20-25; 55-60 at the monthly family nights. Degrees, we pull in anywhere from 35 to 50, counting our traveling brethren.

    Not passing your examination

Agree with Bill... a lecturer or instructor should not present a candidate who isn't ready. If a person has a problem choking up in front of the lodge, the Master can arrange to have him examined by a committee, which then reports back to the lodge. But in case the committee or the lodge...

    General Albert Pike

Albert Pike settled here in Little Rock, and was a prominent citizen here in Arkansas until his old Confederate ties and the post-war/reconstruction economy caused him to move to DC. The Valley of Little Rock, as well as the Grand Lodge of Arkansas meet in the Albert Pike Memorial Temple, AASR...

First degree question on study materials??

Depends on your jurisdiction. Remember your obligation... Here in AR, the only part of the EA work "proper to be written" is the description of the working tools. All else is mouth-to-ear. It's best to get with a good lecturer or instructor and learn the work that way.

    Freemasonry During Wartime

A Masonic Incident - "The day after the battle of Antietam (9/18/1863), the Fifth New Hampshire formed the picket line along the edge of the [Miller’s] cornfield where Richardson's division fought. The reserve was in one edge of the corn, and the pickets about middle way of the field concealed...

    MEMORIZING THE WORK!

Time, patience, and perseverance... Find a good, preferably certified, lecturer, and work with him. Learn the words right the first time; it's much easier to put the good words in in the first place, and much harder to get the bad words out. Learn the questions and answers both, so you can...

My first time visiting another Lodge

Attending another degree shortly after you received your own is a really good way to get started learning your proficiency lectures. My lecturer was taken ill shortly after I got my master's, and I finally went to enough degrees that I could muddle through my master's proficiency two months...

    2014 Certifications

As noted above, Arkansas has the four certified proficiencies: Certified Lecturer, Lodge Officer Proficiency, and Certified Instructor. there is a separate certification for having learned all parts and the floorwork for the second section of the Master's degree. Fundraising

We operate the concession stands at the local coliseum for a number of events throughout the year, and also operate the Coke stand for the State Fair over a ten-day run each October. Did a fish fry in July for the local Demolay, and a spaghetti supper for the RARA.

    Newest Shriner

Not all Shriners are Masons anymore... As of last summer there was a dispensation or exception allowed for the Arkansas Shrine to initiate members directly into the Shrine without having to be Master Masons first. This arose from the 2011-2012 quarrel between the Grand Lodge of Arkansas and...

    Fee's for Degrees?

You are not charged lodge dues until you are raised as a Master Mason. The initiation, or degree fees. cover a number of items... for example the white leather apron presented to you as an EA, your monitor, a Bible, and a few other items presented at your raising. In my experience, the lambkin...

An old man in his dotage

Last Saturday I had the privilege of conferring the Master's degree on an 82-year-old brother... I had done his EA back last November, and all of his lectures and mentoring. Brother B wasn't able to memorize and repeat back the lecture word-perfect, but he was able to prove a working knowledge...

    Scientology

He would need to satisfactorily answer this question: :Do you believe in the one true and living God, and in the immortality of the soul? It's on the petition, and checked again by the Senior Deacon in the prep room. Faith is an individual thing. Masonry doesn't list or blacklist any...

    Saturday Mornings

We (Adoniram #288, Mablevale, AR) open at 7:00 a.m. each Saturday morning for coffee and fellowship, as well as to provide a weekend time for the younger brothers to come work on their proficiency lectures, as well as some of us older guys to come and drill each other on our grand lodge...

    Arkansas Lodge of Research

The Grand Lodge of Arkansas has issued a dispensation re-creating the Arkansas Lodge of Research (actually a new lodge, U.D., since the original Lodge #739 turned in its charter way back in 1954). We are in the first steps of getting organized, but have set up a public page at...
