A challenge coin is used basically the same way as a ring to show you are Mason. A coin usually have the S & C on 1 side and your name, lodge and dates on the other.

You are right there are coins out there but none that just have the s & c and is plain on the on the back to where you can have it engraved with a message that you may want to give to a Brother you raised or a who you brought in to the Craft.
