@JJones - I don't agree w/ #1, and #2 pretty much. But oh man #3 is spot on. And 4. I'd so much prefer a cap/mantle setup which is more accessible and affordable and less... Dorky. ;)
A mnemonic is just a "memory device". Something to help you remember something. Much like ROY-G-BIV to remember the rainbow colors or "my dear aunt Sally" for math order of operations.

I've not heard the saying. Are these people Masons? Perhaps it's a colloquial saying meaning "good work"?
Edit: A cursory search turns up the usage in poetry by Sylvia Plath. Breakdowns of this metaphor on poetry sites suppose it to mean "good person".

IMO I think it is more oft than not the other way around. That is, masonry borrowed ideas from other mystery schools (or were perhaps" infiltrated" by members of other schools and ideas were assimilated) rather than masonry being of such ancient origin. But that's just me.
