Michigan masonic lodge hosts drug-fueled sex party

by BREITBART NEWS 2 Sep 2013, 1:00 PM PDT 46 POST A COMMENT
In Michigan, a local Masonic lodge became a haven for drugs and sex, according to police. Police officers received calls summoning them to the Masonic Lodge in Battle Creek, Michigan, at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday. What they found shocked them: five naked women prancing about on stage, a couple having sex, and several incipient filmmakers with cameras on the action. According to WWMT-TV, the Masonic Lodge has seen this sort of activity before, although the Battle Creek Freemasons deny that they have any involvement. The group blamed the activities on a party promoter who paid $900 for the night.

Re: Michigan masonic lodge hosts drug-fueled sex p

Lodges I know it hard to raise money but we have to be very very careful who we rent out the lodge to this gives us all of us a bad name so now people think we are a drug and sex party animals but the lodge was rented out to NON-MASON but that don' matter the head line read Masonic lodge

I already had someone post this story to my FB page...... Saying now I know your secrets. This is a black eye to the fraternity even though no Masons were involved, like the Brother said, the headline reads Masonic Lodge.

Sometimes the Grand Lodge has some pretty specific rules about who you can rent the lodge hall to, and for what purpose... this is why ;-)

...and somebody ought to check the Digest, 'cause charters have been arrested for a whole lot less.

*Sigh* A couple things about this bother me greatly.
First is the media's subtle spin on the story definitely goes for sensationalism (I know, I know, my mistake for putting any journalistic faith in the Daily Mail). Phrases such as "being hosted at a secretive masonic lodge" and "Battle Creek Freemasons... insisted that the orgy was not part of their rituals" are put in there in predictable sensationalist style to, I don't know, make some sort of "Eyes Wide Shut" kind of connection. It would be pretty funny if it weren't so insulting.
Secondly, I find the reaction of the lodge members themselves a bit disappointing. Rather than just stating that they rented out the space and had zero knowledge of what was going on (which yes they sorta said), they instead go all apologetic and really just cast more suspicion on the whole incident. Why even bring ritual into it? When I first started reading the article, it was more face palm, then when they themselves brought ritual into it, it kinda put the focus there. Bad PR. Pretty sure if a community civic center rented out a space and, say, a minor was caught with alcohol, the civic center would not be fined for the incident, but rather the people renting it out.
Honestly, I feel that if we want to quell some of the more stupid paranoia and CT drivel, we ought to be less apologetic and more direct and to the point when bad stuff does happen and not be so dodgy about it.

This a sad situation for our great fraternity. Even though the lodge was not directly involved, it still very much negatively casts a bad impression on us and IMO violates the EA charge in that this brings "censure or reproach" on us as a whole. I know here in Mississippi our law book, "The Williams Digest", strictly explains as to what a lodge, if any, may or may not extend the lodge building uses. There are even rules as to what kind of other organizations the loge may share a building with. Its a shame!!!

This is sickening. If they weren't a clandestine lodge, I hope the RWGM pulled the warrant that day.

Some lodges have facilities nice enough that renting them turns a net profit. There are lodges that own small shopping malls. There are lodges with banquet facilities nice enough to host weddings or more. In my experience there is always a member present making sure the event is going okay. I take it this lodge forgot that's mandatory? Yikes.

We have to be careful with who we allow to use are facilities. As some have said, if anything happens in a lodge that might reflect poorly on our fraternity then the nutters will be sure to blow it out of proportion.

I get that we need to be careful who we rent to... But if these people went so far as to have drugs and film porn are we to be naive enough to think that they wouldn't lie on the paperwork? Give the brothers some credit... At least enough to know that if the paperwork said "reason for rental: drug use and pornography" they would not have dreamed of doing so. I guess one concern tho could be that the article states something like this has happened before. I dunno... Definitely a sad situation... I think the media is certainly quick to bring sensationalist headlines too

just curious if the lodge was PHA or Mainstream. Either way it hurts, but just curious.

This is sickening. If they weren't a clandestine lodge, I hope the RWGM pulled the warrant that day.

Both of you have greatly missed the issue.

This has nothing to do with being "PHA, Mainstream, Co-Masonic, or Clandestine"; this issue has to do with the general image of the Fraternity of Freemasonry. Regardless of afilliation this publicly known incident creates a mockery for our fraternity and sets us back quite a few years in the respectful image of our fraternity to the outside world.

I am totally offended that this incident occurred and I sincerely hope that the respective Grand Lodge pulls their Charter (regardless of affiliation)!!

Gesh, in Texas we don't even allow the Boy Scouts to rent out facilities :/

I take it you don't mean " ... to rent out facilities because we're expected to donate the facilities to them as long as there's no DeMolay chapter who could use the facility instead".

I'm outraged.

Now that I combined these two posts I'm more outraged that we can't donate facility use to the Boy Scouts than because someone failed to supervised a rental event. I take it the Boy Scout situation is a rule; the other is a tragic or foolish oversight.

As we search for ways to pay for our buildings, we need to be vigilant regarding who we let use our Temples, and we should never leave them unescorted. This is begging for trouble. I would rather have to sell a building than have our Craft's reputation smeared this way.
