GRANT WRITING

I was wondering if anyone else has done grant writing as a way of acquiring funds for various projects for their or other lodges?

I am wondering if anyone has had much success and willing to share info? I have done grants for other groups, but we are a 501c10, seems most grants want you to be 501c3.

The Scottish Rite Learning Centers have begun a national grant writing program. I've written requests for another Masonic charity.

I don't mean this as harshly as it sounds, but I don't believe lodges should be soliciting funds from the public for their projects, unless it is a charity for those outside the fraternity. We are to give charity, not beg for it.

If there are major repairs for a building for example, that can't be funded by the lodge members, wouldn't it be wise to seek funding that has no strings attached verses a loan?

It's not to profit from, but to repair so that the building can be used in the future.

I respect your opinion though, I do understand.

I can certainly understand the need for funds in this day and age with membership low. The concern I have is if you accept outside funding, especially any type of public funds, then those supplying the funds may have the tendency to feel as if they should have a say about the way that we conduct our organization. You don't have to worry so much about this if your organization is totally self sufficient. However, this is only the opinion of a layman. Brother Glen can speak with much more authority on this from a legal aspect.

Which is why you have to know what you are doing when looking for grants, get everything in writing... I have my ba in Human Services which includes grant writing and I am continuing on to get my grant writing consultant certification. Also the board does vote on it before applying to one.

I didn't realize that it would be a shund idea when I know of lodges that have gotten Grants with no issues in my state.

I really wasn't looking to get any lodge in trouble, just looking for ideas.

Totally understandable. I'm not necessarily saying it is a bad idea. I am just a little hesitant in this political climate about possibly opening ourselves up to government interference.
