When available. They need someone in the succession willing to petition (or be invited?) and then to be willing to serve as GM. They may well face a time when there are no available royals for lack of royals who were willing to petition.

I believe PMWGM A.T.Stafford said it best this year at Grand Session " run Against the Grand Master and you will make history because you will be history " lol get elected Grand Jr. Warden and you are inline to one day become Grand Master, this process is not absolute so don't hold me to it but a unwritten understanding I would think but yes seats are declared vacant upon elections
