So Mote It Be! should it only be used in lodge, or every where?

Just a question, and I would like my brethren's thoughts on this please.

I think it would be ok to say in the place of Amen.

What do you guys think?

It's funny. No matter where I am and a prayer is given I say it if only silently to myself.

I say it in an audible tone, like I would say Amen.

Yep, one of the most enduring memories of my grandfather is that he would always say So Mote It Be at the completion of grace before dinner. It's one of the things that impressed on me how important Masonry was in his life.

It means "So may it be." The Old English verb used to just be a synonym for "may". In essence, while "Amen" Greek, from the Hebrew "Amin", "So mote it be." would be the "English translation".

I say it without thinking . For example , the wife and I were at a wedding , after the prayer was given all mumbled "amen" , but I , in a loud and clear voice stated "So Mote it Be" out of habit . Everyone turned to look at me , and those who were Masons chuckled , One old man gave me a wink . The wife whispered "You are not in lodge " , I just shrugged my shoulders .

It's funny , we do not use "So Mote it Be" in the Commandery , we say "Amen" , and it is hard to switch gears when we are opening on the Commandery degrees or have a Commandery function .

I say it all the time, public or private.

It's a habit I suppose...
