Masonry in the Military

Do they have Masonic Lodges on Military bases where a man can be active in Masonry and still serve his country? I want to join the Army but stay active in Masonry is that possible?

As I understand it, most military lodges are PHA lodges. Texas masons, as of now, are not supposed to be attending them (I was told this by a one time Grand Lodge officer). I hope things change soon.

Thanks for the info and I hope things change soon as well so that all brother Masons can dwell together in unity how good and pleasant would that be I have faith that there will come a day were all mainstream Masons and PHA Masons can fellowship Masonically and come together as brothers and be able to visit each others lodges and enhance the Masonic experience and follow the tenants on which our institution was founded on

Brother JB, depending on the jurisdiction, PHA and mainstream Grand Lodges have recognition and one can visit the other and dwell together in unity. I know for sure that Washington State, Massachusetts, and California Grand Lodges recognize each other. I was raised in Washington State and visited one of our PHA Lodges to witness a first degree.

On your other question, it is very possible to travel from West to East while on active duty. I'm an active Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps. I was stationed in Washington when I first approached the western gate of my mother Lodge. Since I've moved to California I have established dual membership with a Lodge here add well as become a very active member of the California York Rite. I've even been invited to York Rite College. I still maintain my membership in my mother Lodge as well.

What is this York Rite college brother is that a school only for York Rite Masons and how might a Mason go about getting into that school?

York Rite College is an invitational body of the York Rite. I'm still in the dark about it because the initiation isn't until August of this year.

If I'm not mistaken, the GL of CA and the MWPHGL of CA share mutual recognition and visitation already. If you are a member, you should be able to visit anywhere.

Depending on where you are stationed would determine whether you can visit both "mainstream" and PHA Lodges. Here in Oklahoma you can visit one and be a member of the other. Also if you are stationed somewhere that has a Lodge close by you can always attend there. In my Lodge we have one active duty member. He affiliated with us after being initiated, passed, and raised in another Lodge. The great thing about Masonry is that no matter where you go you will find it if you seek it out. If you join the Army you may wind up in my neck of the woods at Ft. Sill. If so, hit me up.

You might not find a lodge on post but most posts are near large cities and there is probably a lodge in the city.

As a Texas Mason I know that the GL of Texas recognizes PHL's as Masonic bodies but it is against Masonic Law to hold Masonic communications with them.

Goodmorning brother I've been considering the Army for a long time now but the only thing I'm stuck on is finding the right career in the army for me because I wanna be able to come back home in one piece and continue my Masonic career and education as well as go back to college and earn a degree what is your Mos? I was thinking about engineering,Infantry and calv scout or construction I want a job to where I'm not sitting behind a desk all day long I wanna be hands on and have some type of action with out completely putting myself in harms way

As far as MOS goes. I deal with the 94M MOS. It is radar technician. My backgorund in the Navy was radar and fire control systems. Electronics is always a good way to go. Tons of jobs in the civilian world if you find after 1 stint that the military just isn't the life for you.

Dj87, I haven't been to Bagram since 2004, but from what I understand now there is a Prince Hall affiliated Lodge either there or very close. As a matter of fact, I just found it online. It is Alpha Military Lodge 195. Their website is www.alphamilitarylodge195.org. I hope this helps.

Umm infantry, Cav Scout and Engineer will defiantly put you in harms way. You may want to consider another MOS if your concerned about harm, Infantry and Cav Scout are out in the populace Engineers do the same and conduct route clearance missions looking for IEDs.

There are plenty of Mainstream and PHA lodges around all military bases. However rarely will you find a Mainstream lodge deployed - not that you would have time to visit these if you choose the three MOSs that you mention.
