The sub service is not the whole of the Navy (thank goodness). I like to think of it as an aviation wing with ships.

The sub guys say there are two types of ships. Subs and targets.
We P-3 Orion guys point out they are all targets.
Remembering the supersonic flying sub on the old TV show "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".
Yeah, S-3s saw them all as targets, too.

We (USN) had quite a few sailors (>78,000) on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq in the early 2000s. More than just the Corpsmen who served with the Marines. They were called 'IA's or "Individual Augmentees". We could volunteer at first but then they just started picking sailors to go a year at a time.
(78,000 sailors on the ground, 84 killed, 656 wounded...2001-2014)

I served with an IAd MA in Iraq on 05-06. Great dude...no business being in a combat zone though

Ya ever hear a kid say "hey lets go play..Navy or Air Force or Marines"......NOPE it's always "lets got play ARMY!"...LOL for real though we need the navy. In fact i think we could save billions of dollars a year if we folded the AF and coast guard into the Navy and the Marines into the Army. Let the Army keep the rotary wing assets it has and the Marines rotary wings with the fixed wing going to the Navy.

They already belong to the Navy (aircraft and Marines ;-0)....the Marines are part of the DoN.
